In this Discourse, Tom Scott talks about science communication in the age of social media, how to be popular on the internet, and dealing with a world where view counts are often more important than truth.

Watch the Q&A: padesk.info/two/kILaaqbSrYCl2tk/v

Tom Scott is a British entertainer, educator, PAdeskr, web developer and former presenter of 'Gadget Geeks' on Sky One. He graduated from the University of York with a degree in linguistics. He has a popular PAdesk channel with over 1.6 million subscribers and more than 325 million video views as of June 2019.

In more than fifteen years of publishing on the internet, Tom has visited the High Arctic, passed out in a centrifuge, and somehow got three million people to watch a video about why the British plug is a great invention.

This talk and Q&A was filmed in the Ri on 27 September 2019.

22:28 _"there will be happily dozens of evangelical preachers from all sorts of denominations who will happily bring you back into the fold"_ vs _"dozens of angry atheists who will make you stay out of it"._ Quite different language used to describe those two groups from the professional linguist. Preachers are "happily", atheists are "angry". Preachers "bring you back into the fold". Atheists "make you stay out of it". Probably inadvertent but an interesting example of how subtle language differences put a very different slant on things...

From all of 33:44 to 45:45 really hit me like a truck. I realised that I literally only watch Tom Scott because of how charming he is to me as a person. He's so interesting, and funny and I feel like I have a personal friendship. I am barely interested in anything he talks about - I don't care about g - force or an island that has too much power, but I am interested in him. I enjoy all the memes made about him, the community about him. Literally, even look through these comments, all most all of them are about how he doesn't age, or how he only wears red shirts or something of the like. I literally only like Tom Scott for Tom Scott, and not for anything scientific he talks about.

*@The Royal Institution* There already exists an infallible method of determining the truth from the lies, and it's found in God's Word. *1 John 2:22-25 (NKJV)* _22 Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son. 23 Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father either; he who acknowledges the Son has the Father also._ Who ever denies that Jesus is the Christ, I tend not to believe anything else they have to say regarding any other issue, because they have proven they can not recognize the Truth.

It’s my theory the push to take away performers ability to perform when they break social norms has strongly promoted the idolization of performers.
I still find it incredibly odd when an athlete gets suspended for off the field issues. This didn’t used to be a thing, because people understood there’s a clear difference between art and the artist.
It’s hard to sell that position to kids when performers get punished in their art at the slightest hint of scandal.

He oozes charisma and authority, and audiences can't help but be captivated by him. I'd love to know how he became such a master at public speaking as an aspiring public speaker myself.

This video made me question: if we consider game streams as selling friendship, and we find ourselves concerned with the ramifications of that, ought we not also concern ourselves that a comedian offers a similar bargain? I pay the price of a ticket and in return I get the pleasure of laughter. For that matter, prostitution, sport events, musical performances all provide a reward in the form of some pleasure or other for which they charge a fee. Is this action of 'selling satisfaction' something we ought to concern ourselves with? and I mean, in whatever form it takes. Question mark.

"Ourselves" is defined how? By government regulation, or by freedom? You can't have both. Only one or the other.
I consider "ourselves" to be freedom. But he seemed to call that idea "extreme".

The algorithm has been known since the early 60s. See "Algorithmic Probability". The lecturer starts out with a trivial example that elides the critical difference between "is" and "ought". AP provides what science (hence ostensibly the RI) provides: What "is" the case independent of subjective valuation. To get algorithmic decisions you need Sequential Decision Theory which is parameterized by a utility function, aka value system. SDT is "technology" or "engineering". AP & SDT taken together provide the top-down formalization of AGI called AIXI.

The thoughtful reader will now confront the question of how algorithmic probability could have been ignored in the social sciences for nearly half a century? There are a number of explanations for this but perhaps the most salient explanation is the lack of incentives to get at social truth. The Royal Society was founded precisely to separate is from ought questions during a period of religious enthusiasm. We now experience a world in which people have social theories to which the adhere with religious fervor. This has infected the academy.

It's (perhaps ironically) "politically correct" to equate politics with falsehood or badness, but there is a "truth", even in politics. It isn't so simple, even with how thorough Tom Scott appears to be.

An algorithm for identifying objective truth wouldn't be terribly hard to program. Most people are entirely unaware of their confirmation bias. If we taught people how to be aware of their confirmation bias, as well as coping mechanisms for cognitive dissonance , humans would be more equipped to cope with objective truth. ;-)

There is no "algorythm for truth"
" We are the algorythm for truth"
"Truth is a result of collective reason."
"Ye shall be as God, knowing good and evil"
    THE SERPENT.
