The Blue Origin-led Human Landing System (HLS) National Team - comprised of Blue Origin, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and Draper - delivered an engineering mockup of a crew lander vehicle that could take American astronauts to the Moon. The lander is set up in the Space Vehicle Mockup Facility (SVMF), NASA Johnson Space Center’s (JSC) iconic Building 9.

The full-scale engineering mockup showcases two elements of the National Team’s multi-element architecture - the Ascent Element (AE) and Descent Element (DE). Standing at more than 40 feet, it is the Blue Origin National Team’s update to Apollo’s Lunar Module (LM) and will be used to validate the National Team’s approaches for getting crew, equipment, supplies, and samples off and on the vehicle. The team will collaborate with NASA organizations including JSC’s Astronaut Office to perform engineering and crew operations tests with astronauts aiming to fly the final system within several years.

    @Blue Origin.
    *Give it a rest*
You lost the race, so instead of whining, learn the lessons. The more you fight it in court, the worse it is for your PR. Here's the lesson you should learn.
Blue Origin was founded slightly before SpaceX. In the time it took you guys to build a sub orbital joy ride, SpaceX pioneered the reusable first stage rocket, they made rocket launches routine (At one point, they were launching once a week!) They build a crew capsule that docked with the ISS more than once, and they've put hundreds of satellites in orbit. Now they're busy pioneering the next generation rocket, which - if successful - would put all other rocket companies out of business. They can build the Lunar Starship with or without funding, and their bid was significantly lower than Blue Origin. Blue Origin can't even deliver rocket engines on time, and is late by several years. SpaceX won _on merit._ What exactly does Blue Origin have too offer? A deflated balloon and cool looking CGI? Competition does not mean you get a participation trophy for loosing. Why should the tax payer fund a rocket company that - after 10 years - have virtually nothing of substance to show for it?
The moral of the story is: Stop whining and get to work, you guys have a lot of catching up to do. If Jeff Bezos can blow $500 million on a luxury yacht, then why can't he invest his own fortune into Blue Origin R&D as well? Produce something that is worth while, that actually adds value, like SpaceX, and then maybe, you might start winning contracts. Until then, stop wasting money on frivolous lawsuits, it will be laughed out of the court room because you have no case.

I still can't believe Blue Origin is pushing this piece of crap. Look at that crew compartment! What a joke! Seriously, where do they sleep and work? It's literally just a single cylinder with a diameter of like 6-7 ft. There is literally no room for cargo, EVA suits, etc. Even if starship was not a thing, this would still be a complete joke. This would have been a dope upgrade in 1972, but not now in 2021. Was there seriously not a single person in charge that thought "Maybe we should make this a little bit bigger, more spacious, capable of more cargo, and like half as expensive"? Sooo glad they didn't win the Option A award! I really hope they don't win any of the following contracts!

    • space1 2

      space1 2

Friday Goood still doesn’t change the fact that the lander is costly, dangerous and mostly non reusable, and funny enough blue origin builds the most expensive non reusable aspect of the vehicle (the descent stage) and the transfer element IS NOT reused after taking the vehicle down to a low lunar orbit and assisting in taking the ascent stage back to gateway it is jettisoned and a new one needs to be launched. The Dynetics lander far outclasses this one.

    • space1 2

      space1 2

      ਸਾਲ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ

@Friday Goood reusability is defined as reusing pieces or a full vehicle so falcon 9 and heavy are classified as reusable systems so would you define new Glenn as non reusable? Also no matter the rockets there building outside of Artemis this lander is 2/3 unreusable with only the ascent element being reused while the two other pieces have to be launched again leading to much higher costs. Meanwhile Dynetics and Spacex are actually developing vehicles for reuse (aside from the drop tanks which in theory could be reused and are super cheap to make).

As a taxpayer, space enthusiast and Engineer I'm rooting against the National Team HLS. The system is more expendable than reusable. A new descent element and transfer element have to be launched for every trip to the surface. Pretty much fails the "desirement" for reusability. Ingres/Egress is poor. And most maddening is that the National Team got the lion's share of the award to essentially dust off Apollo era blue prints. New paint on 60 year old technology. Dynetics solution is reusable save the drop tanks. It can deliver a rover or even habitats. Ingress/Egress is optimal. And represents a step forward in how we get to/from the lunar surface. It will be a disappointing day if Blue Origin gets any more money to continue this concept.

Blue Origin is playing massive catch up and is simply trying to create a PR stunt in hopes they actually do go back first, to simply say that, we made it back first. No one cares that you made it back first, we care about cost and staying there. Only Space X IS creating an actual way to go there sustainably and an actual plan on what to do next. Jeff is in it for the money, not for humanity, unlike Elon. When Jeffs teams try to side step regulation to get his (another lame clone and copy) satellite internet network in space, they had to be sued to plan by the rules. Hey guys...Climb 50 feet on your roof. Put on a motorcycle helmet and 30 lbs back pack. Now crawl backwards to a 50 foot ladder and climb down it....not at an angle, 90 degrees to the ground. Now do the same thing on another planet....GOOD LUCK. Landing on the moon is "ALL about weight". So your going to have to have a cable / harness system to safely get astronauts up and down ? What if it malfunctions like the Apollo tethers they tried on the LEM to move rock boxes up and down ? Does anyone at NASA know anything about landing on the moon ?

It hasn't even reached orbit yet. The full starship with flaps and nosecone hasn't even been completed, SH hasn't even been constructed. Lunar starship is as far from flying as the monstrosity NT.

Look at that huge ladder! So you land on the moon. You get your bulky EV suit on with its big backpack, restricted visor, clunky boots, and thick gloves. The next thing you do is to crawl out of the hatch, stand up and climb DOWN a 2 and a half story ladder without being able to see where your feet are and overbalanced with the backpack making you tip backward. Unless the ladder fell off on landing. Or broke. Or bent. What do you do if the ladder breaks on your way back UP the ladder? Climb a rope? Have an emergency winch? If you have a winch, why not use it instead of that freakin ladder! Better yet, have two remote-controlled winches. Geez.

I've asked this question before and never got an answer. What vehicle do you, BO, and the National Team plan on using for your 2024 goal? Vulcan has never flown New Glenn has never flown, Atlas rockets aren't rated for humans, SLS isn't ready and most likely never will be. I do not see a realistic path forward here, please explain.

4 very different companies in a bid together. Huge overhead, endless discussions, huge need for integration testing, different philosophies, different way of working, some extremely traditional and probably only 1 company(at least I kinda hope so that there is at least one....) which is very innovative minded. A recipe for budget overshoot, unrealistic planning and major failures. But I hope to get proven wrong. I am on #teamSpace, not a fanboy or hater to any company; but I do have more faith in that company that does something with space and its company name ends with an X. Either way, it's good there are multiple companies working on getting stuff done and not just 1 or 2 contractors which are perfectly happy to keep everything in the lab or on the drawing board - since they keep getting paid regardless of (lack of) results. It's a great age for space enthousiasts!

I would like to be supportive of #teamspace, but Blue Origin’s recent conduct in how they’re handling the HLS situation is so petty and underhanded. Yes competition is good, but I believe that it should be a mechanism to make the rivals push themselves to perform better, not put each other down. Blue Origin have missed the point and are in fact hindering the Artemis project, not helping it! And that goes to show that they’re NOT driven by their so called “vision” of millions of people living and working in space. It’s all about corporate greed. I’m so disappointed in them and their recent behaviour. So so disappointed.

@John Pombrio The SN5 test did appear successful, and was pretty cool. But while it is the same size as the real deal, it has fewer engines, no life support systems, etc. Those differences are significant enough that one would be hard pressed to consider the flight of SN5 to be a flight of Starship. It's a prototype, and a promising test flight. And the National Team doesn't have a comparable test flight of elements of their system. So, unnecessary snarkiness notwithstanding, you're right that as far as we know the Nat'l Team's system can't currently get into the air. SpaceX's rapid iteration and testing workflow seems to be on display. Of course, even though SN5 was able to get into the air, Starship can't get to the Moon by itself, as it will need Super Heavy. That doesn't exist yet. Nor does ULA's Vulcan or Blue Origin's New Glenn, which the Nat'l Team's HLS requires. Dynetics' system also requires Vulcan. (The National Team and Dynetics could also use SLS, which is further along, currently undergoing green run testing. But the availability of an SLS for the launch of the Artemis III HLS doesn't look likely from what I've read. And none of the 3 proposals launch astronauts themselves, but instead depend on an Orion capsule launched on an SLS. So, as planned, they're all equal in that respect.) Again, it just strikes me as way too early to be crapping on any of the 3 systems.

@Rajesh Raghavan The assumption that Blue Origin had intentions of taking the same development path at the same rate (and thus taking their lack of comparable flights being due to inferior ability or the like) are just that, assumptions. No doubt SpaceX has flown way more hardware. But that doesn't establish that Blue Origin wanted to take the same route but failed. It is possible that they intentionally were taking a different path. Indeed, they didn't even start pursuing orbital spaceflight until 2014, four years after the first Falcon 9 launch. So you very well might be making an apples to oranges comparison. Reality might be more complex than you're making it out to be. Also, there's New Shepard, which is a suborbital rocket, but also not an "inflatable model." And there's the New Shepard's BE-3 engine. And well into development, so not final flight hardware but also not "inflatable models," are the New Glenn rocket and its BE-4 engine (which is also scheduled to be used on ULA's Vulcan). Also in development, and thus more than an "inflatable model," is the BE-7 rocket engine, scheduled to be used on the HLS.

Rajesh Raghavan Well, I think they understand the problem better than any of us so if they’re still proposing the “age old design” I’d say there’s probably a very good list of reasons for it. Just because a certain company is promoting one particular area, that doesn’t mean it’s the best or even only answer for the moment. SpaceX fans assume this stuff is easy. They talk of landing people on Mars as though it could happen tomorrow and top scorn on anything that uses any other ideas.
