This shows the facility built by the United States government in the 1960's called Camp Century.

Camp Century. Should have been called Camp Ten-Kay, because it will take that long for all of the nuclear waste they left there "sequestered" under the ice, along with all of the other toxic crap they had at camp--to decay to safe levels.

Everyone involved in this project owes not only a full explanation, but a total liquidation of their assets back to the American people.

It would be interesting to know how many dollars has gone into that project. What was the pay off? Whatever the cost it would probably not even feature in the overall amount of resources which the USA spends on its military.

Too bad that whole project went down because no engineer took into account as simple as ice and snow moves.
DogGambit
@Ordinary Guy Good luck in your future life of delusions. Also, have fun with your one-size-fits-all answer to every problem as "human factors". Congratulations on believing that everything we know now was known in as much detail in the past.
Ordinary Guy
@DogGambit You can act as much as you want as a Jester but I walk away like a true gentelmen from pointless arguing knowing I won.
DogGambit
@Ordinary Guy - You made the correct choice. Walk away with your tail between your legs. Ha Ha! Just Kidding! ... Or am I? You know I am ... Are you sure?
Ordinary Guy
@DogGambit Ok, we can stop this discussion, it is just leads us to nowhere but it is still human factor that lead projects downfall.
DogGambit
@Ordinary Guy - When did I ever say that snow and ice don't move. When did I ever say that the people back then were not aware of snow and ice movement. I never said that. My point, which you apparently completely missed, was that perhaps even the experts were not aware of the EXTENT to which it moved. They perhaps didn't know by how much it would move in a certain period of time. We now know how much. But did even the experts back in the 1950s know by how much? Scientific knowledge advances with time. We know more now than they did in the 1950s.

Project Iceworm caused a major diplomatic dispute between the U.S. and Denmark (which has dominion over Greenland) when it became known that the real purpose of Iceworm was to investigate positioning ICBMs under the Greenland icecap. Naturally, they didn't tell you that part of the story here. This is the kind of "knowledge" they sought there. The project was abandoned when it was found that the ice was subject to excessive movement.
dank donkerson
@MrShobar well if it isn't Mr Paul Harvey returned from the dead, please tell us "The Rest Of The Story". you kind of left it vague, we all know ice moves but what are the particulars of the "secret base of Greenland". Funny, in 1992 they were able to retrieve a P38 aptly named "Glacier Girl" from under 268 feet of ice and snow that had been there since 1942 and in 2007 get it flying again. kind of an achievement considering it was deeper in the ice than the secret Greenland base was oh and dont just quote Wiki on this, give us your first hand knowledge of the affair
MrShobar
@dank donkerson The Fourth Estate. And you're wrong on just about everything else, too.

this was back when people could keep a secret, not like today where anyone and everyone can blab about a secret project and nothing happens to them and this includes the 3rd estate.........bunch of traitors and to quote General Sherman "I hate newspapermen. They come into camp and pick up their camp rumors and print them as facts. I regard them as spies, which, in truth, they are." "If I had my choice I would kill every reporter in the world, but I am sure we would be getting reports from Hell before breakfast."

I don't know who decided this was a Secret base. I served a year on the ice cap at a place named Camp Tuto. It was a support base for Century. The reactor was removed in 63/64 by the Engineers. The unit I commanded was disestablished in 65/66. I will always remember my year there and how difficult it was to deal with the 24 hour Summer days. The 24 hour no sun days were much easier.
Jeff Spaulding
I don't think the base itself was intended to be secret. Project Iceworm (with its plans for nuclear missiles under the ice) was secret. Not even the Danes (officially) knew about it. Camp Century was publicly presented as a scientific endeavor. All that got scrapped when it turned out that ice flows enough to destroy your tunnels, but by that time ICBMs were becoming a thing and Thule's purpose started shifting towards space monitoring and early warning.
normdoty
i wonder if naval personal are used to run the atomic pile since we already run dozens of them on all of our ships and a training facility in Idaho since the 50's.. i am wondering if camp "Century" is still in operation ?? great video, keep posting more like this and others !!

Should send this video to Elon. He has plans to go to an even colder place.

One of the great endeavours by the USA in the name of world peace which turned out to be a fail in the end. In this case not a country and its population being abandoned and left in turmoil, this one is about walking away from responsibility for a luring environmental disaster in someone else’s territory.

Well this makes it sound like this base was just an innocent research facility but in truth it was a project whose end goal was to install a vast network of nuclear missile launch sites that could survive a first strike by the USSR according to documents declassified in 1996.

Oh look, its the US, once more polluting the planet with nuclear waste to install nuclear missiles just to fail and abandon it in less than 10 years and never clean up their mess.

CrabTastingMan
Simultaneously, WW2 was a time period when old noble families of Europe, and pioneer robber-barons of industry riding the coattails of centuries of colonialism (that made Hitler's 6 years of colonizing Europe look angelic) lost a lot of money, and these trickled into both the government and the lower classes of people. It took them 80 years to retake the world's wealth back to pre-War percentages, and we are feeling the consequences of this now.

Abandoned after less than ten years of service. One major reason was the proximity of the raw sewage containment leaking into the residential quarters. Now there are radio-active, chemical,( PCB), diesel fuel and human waste contaminants that are being moved by subsurface melt waters. The U.S. or Danish governments have not committed on the necessary clean-up.
Stephen Jablonsky
They neglected to mention that the camp was built without the approval of Denmark. When the camp was abandoned much of the hazardous material was left there for contamination far in the future. This was just one more military fuckup by people with bad ideas and little vision.
Sean Ingram
